Steps to cook

  • Step 1

    Place 1 1/2 cups dried white navy beans in a saucepan and pour in 3 cups water. Place over medium heat and bring to the boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 30-40 minutes until beans are tender. Drain and set aside.

  • Step 2

    Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Add half a finely chopped small onion and cook for 8-10 minutes or until very soft. Add drained beans, 2 tablespoons tomato paste, 2 teaspoons brown sugar, 1/4 teaspoon smoky paprika, salt and cracked black pepper. Pour in 2 cups water.

  • Step 3

    Bring mixture to a simmer and cook for 10 minutes or until beans are very soft, stirring regularly to prevent mixture from sticking to the base of the pan.

  • Step 4

    Serve beans immediately on slices of toasted bread.
