Highly regarded in their land of origin, China, this citrus fruit was given the name ‘mandarin’ after the officials of the Imperial Court.

Buying

Choose firm mandarins. Heavier fruit tend to be juicier.

Storing

Mandarins can be stored in or out of the fridge. If chilled, they will keep for up to two weeks.

Nutrition

Not only do mandarins have a good amount of vitamin C, other vitamins, minerals and fibre, citrus fruit has over 170 different beneficial phytochemicals. Eating plenty of citrus fruit has also been associated with reduced risk of coronary heart disease and stroke.

Using mandarins

Mandarins make the perfect snack and also add a delicious, sweet, citrus twist to cooking. Try adding chopped mandarin to a meat marinade or stir-fry sauce.

Did you know? Around Chinese New Year, mandarins are traditionally given as gifts or used decoratively, as they are considered symbols of abundance and good fortune.
